The theatre has its origins in the sacred plays of the ancient Greeks, and hence it is similar in many ways to ritual - the importance of structure, the use of rhythm. In some very important respects, however, it is dissimilar from ritual. Theatre has actors and a human audience; ritual has participants and no human audience.
